my thoughts

My reading speed usually leans more on the side of super leisurely. Like a long stroll on an overcast day. But this book, this book had me hooked!

A long-ago story that affects an entire island all the way down to how people choose to love eachother. People living higher on the hilltop believing they have been the chosen few to follow the blessings of their gods and reap the rewards that come with it. While others endure and suffer because they weren’t born of privilege.

The book’s drama encaptures the torment and tension that comes from making life changing decisions and their effects on not only oneself but also the environment. Not a drama just about a few characters stuck in a will-they-wont-they love triangle-y trope, but about a woman whose parents faught to have their daughter sent to a prestigious academy to give her the opportunity to have a better life than they thought they could provide. To amongst the privileged. But after she graduates and is married off to a high-ranking family her world changes.

All the things she’d learned are put to the test, and she’s learned that even if you were given all the tutoring in the world, nothing could set her up for what was to come.

Needless to say, I’m chomping at the bit to read the final book!
